PORTSMOUTH VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Welcome to the Portsmouth Volunteers In Schools (VIS) program. The volunteer program will provide you an opportunity to become involved in our schools’ activities. Volunteers like you play a valuable role in education. The entire school community, students, parents, teachers, and administrators benefit from the work of dedicated individuals such as yourself – people who are willing to share their time and talents in support of quality education.
Hathaway Elementary School VIS Coordinator is your liaison with the school. The coordinator is your FIRST point of contact if you have any questions or problems as a volunteer. The VIS Coordinator can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
You will NOT be able to volunteer in the classroom until your application is approved. Please keep in mind that the background check can take at least 2 weeks. This MUST be done EVERY year.
Rhode Island General Law 16-2-18.4 states that any person who is a current or prospective volunteer of a private school or public school department and who may have direct and unmonitored contact with children or students on school premises shall undergo a state criminal background check (BCI application) to be initiated prior to or within one week of commencement of such volunteer work. Under the statute, the state criminal background check is valid for one year.
The BCI application can be printed by clicking on the red VIS APPLICATION button on this page or obtained in the school office. When your form is completed and notarized, you can drop it at your school’s main office or the school department administration office. Either office will need to take a photocopy of your valid driver’s license, if you have not provided one. This authorizes the School Committee and its agents to investigate the individual’s background. As a matter of policy, the Portsmouth School Department performs this procedure in order to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff. Notary Services are also available at Town Hall, or at Clements’ Marketplace with a $1 donation to the food bank.
There are two forms to be filled out when you submit your BCI: electronic and paper.
- The electronic form can be accessed by clicking here to register via the school department application. This is required in order to give the school department your most up-to-date contact information, your child’s grade level, school, and classroom teacher for the current school year.
- The 2nd form requires you to select specific events and tasks in which you are interested in participating. This form will be sent home at the beginning of the school year.
Both forms help the VIS and Event Coordinators contact volunteers for their events. Thank you, your cooperation is appreciated.
